Joe Jonas Lost Virginity at 20, Smoked Weed with Miley Cyrus & Demi Lovato
Now that the Jonas brothers have broken up, one member of the group is coming forward with details of his personal life which he's kept under wraps to maintain the band's squeaky clean image.
Among the topics discussed in Joe Jonas' essay for New York Magazine?
Losing his virginity at 20 and smoking marijuana with then-14 year olds Miley Cyrus and Demi Lovato, who he says pressured him to "try it, try it!"
Joe Jonas Speaks Out About Smoking Weed, Having Sex
The Jonas brothers, if you recall, shot to fame after being given a popular series on the Disney channel. But that fame, Joe says, came with a price.
That price? Disney controlled them, down to the way they wore their hair.
"We didn't want to disappoint anyone - our parents, our fans, our employers - so we put incredible pressure on ourselves, the kind of pressure that no teenager should be under," Joe writes.
Their fame made the regular pressures of being teenagers more difficult. Suddenly they were fielding questions about their virginity and didn't know it was okay not to answer them.
Jonas states that neither he nor his brothers intended to become "the poster boys for abstinence" and they took off their famous True Love Waits rings a few years back.
"I lost my virginity when I was 20," Joe writes, though he remains mum on who the lucky lady was.
"I'm glad I waited for the right person, because you look back and go 'That girl was bat$hit crazy. I'm glad I didn't go there."
Might be be talking about his relationship with Taylor Swift? Jonas wouldn't say, because unlike her, he doesn't use his music to disparage his past lovers.
Jonas' relationship with Demi Lovato was another important one for his fans. It had a much bigger impact on him than anyone at the time could have known.
Demi Lovato and Miley Cyrus encouraged the then-17 or 18 year old to smoke weed with them, which puts them at about 14 years old at the time.
"They kept saying 'try it! try it!' so I gave it a shot, and it was all right. I don't even smoke weed that often anymore."
He's also not a big drinker. After avoiding landing on the cover of a tabloid when he was caught drinking at 16 or 17, he learned to be more careful. At least until his 21st birthday when he fell down a flight of stairs while drunk. He avoided the tabloids that time, too.
Now that his career has taken a solo turn, Joe Jonas feels free.
"Now that I'm 24 and have control of my life, I'm going back to the drawing board."
What will he come up with? We can't wait to find out.
