Peter has one of the most storied careers in Hollywood. He was nominated eight times for Academy Awards for his roles in Lawrence of Arabia(1962),Becket(1964),The Lion in Winter(1968),Goodbye, Mr. Chips(1969),The Ruling Class(1972),The Stunt Man(1980),My Favorite Year(1982), and Venus(2006). While he holds the record for having the most Oscar nominations without a single win, he was given an honorary Academy Award in 2003.

Peter began his acting career as one of the most promising young British actors of his time, performing on stage at the Bristol Old Vic in England.
His 1955 lead role as Hamlet in Hamlet was critically acclaimed.
He retired from acting in 2012 with a poignant note to the world:
It is time for me to chuck in the sponge. To retire from films and stage. The heart for it has gone out of me: it won’t come back. My professional acting life, stage and screen, has brought me public support, emotional fulfillment and material comfort. It has brought me together with fine people, good companions with whom I’ve shared the inevitable lot of all actors: flops and hits. However, it’s my belief that one should decide for oneself when it is time to end one’s stay. So I bid the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell.
