French electronic robot duo Daft Punk took home the biggest prize tonight at the 2014 Grammy Awards, beating out some of music’s most celebrated artists to take home the precious Album of the Year trophy. Do you think the right artist won?

Alicia Keys, Olivia Harrison, and Yoko Ono named the nominees for album of the year, and seemed psyched to announce Random Access Memories as the eventual victor. Since Daft Punk are robots who cannot speak, songwriter Paul Williams took the stage along to accept the award, and gave an amusing and touching speech that perfectly capped off the night.
“Back when I was drinking and using, I used to imagine things that weren’t there that were frightening,” Paul said. “Then I got sober and two robots called me and asked me to make an album.”
Then Paul — on behalf of the robots — praised Macklemore and Ryan Lewis‘ earlier performance, during which 34 same-sex couples were married.
Daft Punk had some pretty stiff competition this year. In addition to Random Access Memories, Sara Bareilles’ The Blessed Unrest, Kendrick Lamar’s Good Kid, M.A.A.D City, Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ The Heist, and Taylor Swift’s Red all racked up nominations for Album of the Year.
What do you think, FroshLifers? Did Daft Punk deserve to win?
